The Program Evaluation Working Group facilitates the sharing of best practices in program design and evaluation among Alliance members, with the goal of raising the level of program evaluation capacity within the health research community. Strategies used to reach that goal include establishing common evaluation parameters, sharing evaluation tools, disseminating results, and combining and sharing data. There are many benefits of conducting joint evaluation projects, including the opportunity to benchmark against similar programs and to increase sample size, thereby improving confidence in evaluation research findings.
Projects:
Evaluation Working Session: A working session on evaluation was held at the Health Research Alliance Steering Committee meeting in September 2005 at the JDRF offices in New York City. The session, which included Alliance members and guests from the National Institute of Health's National Cancer Institute, focused on identifying a common core set of variables that funders can monitor for current or future outcome evaluations of career development programs that support clinical investigators. The results of that session are providing the core content for a white paper on the evaluation of career development programs for clinical investigators that is currently under development.
HRA Member Evaluation Survey: In the spring of 2007, the Program Evaluation Working Group conducted a survey of HRA member organizations designed to identify a baseline of program evaluation activity among members. The results of that survey and the outcome of the May 2007 HRA Advisory Committee session on the use of logic models in evaluating health research award programs will determine the Working Group's next efforts in helping member organizations enhance their program evaluation capacity.
