In late 2008, the Health Research Alliance formed the Translational Philanthropy Working Group, focused on the members' common desire to increase the speed at which scientific discoveries are translated to patient benefit. The Working Group is developing resources to share with HRA member organizations interested in climbing the learning curve on the many different models organizations have tried to accelerate translation, as well as a number of issues specific to translational philanthropy, such as tax law implications of the different models, intellectual property issues, strategies for repayment of investment and profit sharing models. The group is co-chaired by Sharon Hesterlee, Ph.D., of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Bill Phelps, Ph.D. of the American Cancer Society.
