Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Organization Overview

HHMI is a science philanthropy whose mission is to advance biomedical research and science education for the benefit of humanity. For more than 60 years, HHMI has empowered exceptional scientists to pursue fundamental questions about living systems. As a medical research organization, HHMI makes long-term investments in leading scientists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, enabling them to pursue long-term, high-risk/high-reward research and encouraging them to follow their instincts and apply creative approaches to hard problems. Through innovative science education programs, HHMI seeks to inspire the next generation of scientific innovators and strengthen education in biology and related sciences. In addition to HHMI’s support of scientists and educators at universities, colleges, and other sites nationwide, we operate our own research campus, the Janelia Research Campus. HHMI is dedicated to broadening participation in and access to science for all, including women and members of underrepresented groups.
