The ability to communicate the value of science is key to increasing impact of a funder’s investment in biomedical research. This new Community will help HRA members communicate scientific impact to boards, patients, donors, and a variety of other stakeholders. By doing so, it is hoped that an increased public respect for science will also be an output. Increasing the ability of HRA members' staff to effectively communicate science and the impact of the science they fund, is another valuable strategy to accelerate the pace of discovery and foster innovation. Activities for the future: ▪ Host sessions related to communicating... read more →
Dear HRA members, We recently completed an evaluation of a program supporting innovations in a specific disease area, sickle cell disease. However, we are having trouble finding comparisons against which to benchmark our portfolio’s outcomes such as follow on funding, number of publications, and return on our dollars. Have you done an evaluation of a grant program including follow-on funding and bibliometric indicators? And if it has been published? Thank you! Sindy
The session will focus on racial disparities and opportunities to foster and support diversity, equity, and inclusiveness within the research workforce, specifically at the postdoc and early career faculty level. Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds may lack the social structures and networks to sustain career development in research, so the role of professional communities and mentorship relationships may be even more important. Can foundations work with academic institutions, federal funders, and other stakeholders to address this through recruitment, retention, mentorship, and networking strategies? What are the key parameters and metrics of success to consider? Moderator Gerard Honig, PhD Associate Director of... read more →

We live in a world of problems so complex that they cannot be effectively addressed by any one organization or even by any one sector. There is a growing understanding among social, private, and public sector leaders that lasting change and the resolution of these systemic issues is going to require effective collaboration across silos, across organizations, and across sectors. Unfortunately, realizing the grand potential of collaboration is notoriously difficult in the real world. Historically, HRA members have forged collaborations organically through informal networking. However, the potential for developing even more impactful collaborations remains significant. To this end, the Health... read more →
