About HRA Open

HRA Open is a web-based service sponsored by the HRA that not only promotes open science, but also enables HRA member-funded awardees to link grant support to awardees’ research outputs. We are excited to provide this service to HRA members in an effort to make science more OPEN and to enhance the ability to track the outputs of your funded research!

There are 3 prerequisites to participation:

  1. Grant records must be in HRA Analyzer
  2. You must complete a Participation Request Form (see the bottom of this page)
  3. Your awardees must have an ORCID

If you don’t require an ORCID from your awardees, you might want to start.  HRA members can join the ORCID US Community which provides a lot of support for less money than an individual membership. ORCID membership is NOT necessary to participate.

HRA Open enables awardees to upload and share publications into PubMed Central (PMC) via the NIH Manuscript Submission system (NIHMS). Awardees are also encouraged to share ALL research outputs via Figshare.  The HRA Open Platform creates linkages between grants, articles, and research outputs.

The NIH NIHMS system facilitates the submission process of peer-reviewed manuscripts for inclusion in PubMed Central in compliance with the NIH or participating funder’s public access policy. Further information on the participating funders (including HRA Member organizations) as well as public/open access policies can be found here.

The HRA Open collaboration includes:
• The National Library of Medicine (NLM), which enables awardees to deposit peer-reviewed publications into PubMed Central (PMC) using the NIH manuscript submission system, and
• Figshare which facilitates uploading other materials related to funded projects into Figshare, including figures, datasets, presentations, and other research outputs.

HRA is pleased to offer this opportunity to the members who have a public or open access policy that requires the deposit of funded research papers in PMC. NLM has very strict requirements for the funders with whom they partner. For instance, similar to eligibility for HRA membership, NLM requires funders who are their partners to have a robust scientific review process.

HRA Open is the platform that connects the functionality from these systems –  enabling not only the upload of publications and research outputs, but also linking outputs such as datasets, figures, preprints, presentations to the related publication, and then linking those various outputs to the grant that funded the work.  Thus, HRA Open fosters open policies AND helps track research outputs from your funding.
